In the first step, Medco had developed a renewable energy program in partnership with a Korean company. However, in recent years, Medco started to focus more on farming management.
Medco’s founders believe that the farming industry is one of the keys to reach food self-sufficiency. Therefore, many research and feasibility studies were conducted to assess the prospect of Merauke’s land. Based on the assessment result, in 2016 Medco started to manage rice fields, sorghum, and dryland farming to grow corn and soybean.
In the beginning, the project started with creating a 400 hectares of rice field. In 2017, this amount increased to 1000 hectares. The operation of these rice fields involves local citizens. Medco also cooperates with vocational schools in Merauke to provide training and knowledge about modern farming to youth in Merauke.
Besides farming, Medco also built a Biomass Power Plant with a capacity of 3,5mW. In 2020 it started to operate and connected to the PLN network in Merauke
